The 2016 Jester One Music Top 20 Countdown - #16

#16 - van Canto - Time And Time Again

After several years of pushing, the amazing a cappella "hero metal" act van Canto finally broke through to land at #16 on the 2016 Countdown. The German sextet consist of a male and female singer, a drummer and three singers doing a cappella metal guitar vocals (bass, high guitar and low guitar). It makes for a wonderfully unique sound and the band is quite prolific in their writing, releasing an album every two years since 2006. Voices of Fire is an epic metal opera narrated by the one and only John Rhys-Davies. Each song begins with a prologue telling the tale of 5 heroes as they travel through battle, betrayal and finally triumph to find harmony where it was once broken. Other stand-out tracks include "The Oracle", "Battledays Dawn", and "The Bardcall". Honestly there isn't a terrible song on the record, and hearing John Rhys-Davies narrate almost makes it all worthwhile even without the music.

"Time And Time Again" starts out with a solid heavy bassline and kicks into a tale of finding the courage to head back into battle and find the hero within you. It also features an excellent (actual) guitar solo.  If you've never had the pleasure of enjoying some van Canto, I would suggest you sit back, relax, crack open an ale and let your ears be the judge of this awesomeness!
