January Recap

Thanks to Last.FM for all of these stats.

In January, I totally 2324 unique scrobbles, an average of 74 per day. If all of those songs were played back to back, they would go for 6 days and 17 hours. I suppose that's a lot of music! Lol

Those scrobbles came from 797 unique artists, an average of 2.916 scrobbles per artist. My top 3 tags were "Rock", "Classic Rock" and "80s", while my top 3 listening hours were 11p-12a, 12a-1a, and 10p-11p. Sensing a theme?

Here's a couple of lists.

Top 10 Songs of January

T10. Climax Blues Band - Couldn't Get It Right
There were a handful of songs at #10, but this one was definitely my favorite. It came up on our "Timeless Pop" station at work after the new year, and I immediately recognized it as a treasure from my past.

9. VNV Nation - Only Satellites
Keep your eye on this one - it's an early favorite to make the 2019 Countdown

8. VNV Nation - Arena
Arena seems to be another one of those VNV songs that just hangs around and can never be skipped. It simply fits all of my moods.

7. Mr. Mister - Kyrie
Speaking of moods, Kyrie is one of those songs that gets play when I need encouragement. I suppose that's why it ended up at #21 last year.

6. Billy Idol - Save Me Now
If you've never heard this song before, you might not be alone; it comes from Idol's 2014 release "Kings & Queens of the Underground". I didn't realize Idol had released another record in the 2000s, but I'm glad I found it.

5. Mesh - The Last One Standing
This one just never ends. #6 last year and continuing the trend for another season.

4. Fleetwood Mac - Say You Will
There's an interesting duality with Fleetwood Mac that i've discussed many times. I love Christine McVie, I cannot stand Stevie Nicks. Say You Will comes from the Mac's last studio record from back in 2003, and something about how the melodies on this song have always just captured me, even with Nicks on vocals.

3. The Benjamin Gate - How Long
I'm not sure when this song will wear off. I'm still living in this bizarro post-Pastor Simon world, and this is the song that is carrying me.

2. Alvvays - In Undertow
In Undertow was a song that just missed out on making it to the 2018 final plays list, but it started this year strong. Something about the strain in Molly Rankin's voice really hits me hard.

1. VHS Collective - Sign
At the end of 2018, I had Spotify make me a "Playlist Similar To..." my 2018 daily list. The results were mixed as expected, but pointed me towards a newer band with a recent release that immediately floored me. Keep your eye on this one for 2019 as well.

Top 10 Artists of January

10. VHS Collective
There's that. The album wasn't bad but so far it's Sign that has really hit me for this year.

9. Solitary Experiments
SE's new record is pretty solid as well. Might see them debut on the 2019 list.

8. Assemblage 23
Where there is smoke, there is usually fire, right? The electronica theme of January wouldn't have been complete without some A23.

7. The Rolling Stones
I heard Tumbin' Dice at work and realized that it had been a long time since I gave "Exile on Main St" a spin.

6. Type O Negative
On my first day off of 2019, I felt like Peter Steele was calling me. He's always calling, right?

5. Mesh
I felt called to listen to Mesh's older catalogue and found a few new favorites to go with the ones that are usually in my daily rotation.

4. Depeche Mode
When the Christmas music finally died away, our "Old School Workout" playlist at work had been updated with a few Depeche Mode jams that hadn't previously been there. Like I need an excuse to give "Violator" a spin.

3. Aurelio Voltaire
AV's "new" album came out in January - the quotation marks are because the songs are from an older project that have been remastered and finally released. It was definitely an interested disc.

2. Anberlin
The conversation among my favorite bands from high school usually goes like this - "What record have I been neglecting recently?". Obviously bands like Cold, Korn, Demon Hunter and such get plenty of play throughout the year, but sometimes I feel the need to revisit old nostalgic feelings. In January, Anberlin championed that effort.

1. VNV Nation
There's a new VNV record. Go listen to it. You will not be disappointed.

Fun stuff. Thanks Last.FM!
