Mental Health and Music

Ever since I started with Music in Motion - Columbus, I have been... overwhelmed... by the amount of understanding and support I have found from the scene, in terms of dealing with mental health and stigmas.

I spent so much of my childhood and teenage years being made to believe that anyone dealing with mental illnesses should be shoved into a closet, in a corner, and under a rug. Hidden like a nasty stain. Made to believe that the imbalances in my brain were some sort of dark mark upon my soul and being.

The sad thing is that all of this was only 15, 20, 25 years ago. If I think back half of my lifetime ago, 17 year old me was CONSTANTLY plagued with suicidal thoughts and depression. And that was BAD, so bad. I was a bad person for thinking and feeling like that. If you want to know why suicide is so prevalent, it's because we went too long making young people feel that way.

Fast forward to now, and I legitimately cannot do an interview with a single artist without the topic of mental health coming up. In serious doses, too, and each artist I have spoken with has given me more thoughts and ideas on how to handle the darkness.

With that being said, I honestly feel like I could do a music blog specifically tailored to talking about those things in music. In the interim, if you have those thoughts or feels and want to chat about them, let's talk! You are not alone, and I assure you I have 0% judgment on any mental health topics. I am as zonked as it comes, promise. I want to support you and your craft.
