March Recap

Thanks to Last.FM for all of the stats.

February is always such a weird month when it comes to numbers, due to the shortness in days. For March, I had 2212 unique scrobbles, up 26% from the previous month.  Back to back, that's six days and 4 hours worth of music. All total, there was 750 artists accounting for those scrobbles, averaging 2.95 per artist. "Rock", "Synth Pop" and "Futurepop" were the 3 most popular genres, while 10p-11p was the hour with the most plays. 12p-1p and 11p-12a rounded out the top 3. It's always going to be the off-work hours, especially driving to and from that take those crowns. I think now that baseball is back, the evening hours will see a slight decline.

Top 10 Songs of March
T9
...as usual, there's a tie at the bottom of the list. Kein Zuruck by Wolfsheim, In Vain by Within Temptation, Sign by VHS Collection holding strong, More Than This by Solar Fake, Forever by Necessary Response, and (What A) Wonderful World by Sam Cooke sneaking in at #9.

8. VNV Nation - Only Satellites
Like I said last month, this one just keeps on racking up the scrobbles.

7. VNV Nation - Chrome
VNV begets more VNV.  As it is, as it always will be. Lol. Chrome is an interesting one because as far as the tracks with lyrics on Matter + Form, it ranks low. But from time to time I get VNV angry, and this song returns.

6. Truslow - Liar
The Truslow explosion has pushed on for another month. I'm guessing that once they release new music, it'll all happen again.

5. The Hollies - Carrie-Anne
Oldie by a goodie. I hadn't heard this one in a while and it came up at work; immediately it lifted my spirits.

4. REO Speedwagon - Time For Me To Fly
Here's that "every once in a while an 80s song just takes over" thing again. It honestly feels like an aberration, as I've never really loved this song and I don't usually listen to much Speedwagon.

3. Truslow - Hurricane
See above.

2. Demon Hunter - The Negative
I was curious when I saw that DH was releasing two different records simultaneously. Why limit your excellence, or mediocrity? As it seems to be, DH took their heavier tracks and put them on one record, and the softer on another. It's a bizarre split, as I've always appreciated the juxtaposition on their previous records. We'll see if they latch on at the end of the year.

1. The Benjamin Gate - How Long
I still cannot detach myself from this song. I'm pretty sure it'll be in heavy rotation the next two months as well, with Easter and my anniversary coming up.

Top 10 Artists of March

10. Korn
I'm not the same angry angsty 20-something that I once was, but Korn still holds a strong place in my heart.

9. Brave the Sea
Brave the Sea released a new record and I did a show review for them, so of course they made the Top 10 this month. They're a band that usually percolates around St. Patrick's. I was wondering if any of the usual suspects (Flogging Molly, The High Kings, etc) would make the cut this year.

8. Norah Jones
I needed to soothe myself after a rough couple of weeks, and Norah was just the right prescription for the month.

7. Apoptygma Berzerk
I've written before about how Apop was somewhat of a springboard for me to get into more mainstream darker music many years ago (before I was obsessed with VNV, A23, etc). I've listened to their singles collection more times than I can count, but it occurred to me that I haven't really spent a lot of time going album to album with them. That has to be remedied.

6. The Cure
Call it "Cure"-ious (okay, that was bad), but there are a lot of times where I just really want to listen to Robert Smith and/or Morrissey. I love both of their bands and find them absolutely timeless and perfect for my mellow moods.

5. Solar Fake
Looks like Mesh got bumped in favor of SF in March. Both are usually high by the end of the month, through one reason or another.

4. Assemblage 23
Sometimes I tell myself that I NEED more Assemblage in my life, and I go splurge on them.

3. Truslow
There is a decent distance between the top 3 this month and the rest, which are all within one or two scrobbles of each other.  The Truslow show was at the end of February, and I think they'll fall back a little after this month, but we will see.

2. Demon Hunter
Like I said, new DH records means lots of DH listening.

1. VNV Nation
Lather, rinse, repeat.
