#13 - Mad Anthony - Sad Songs (ft Steve Wethington)
One of my favorite back stories this year is this band and song. As many know, I finally got married in May of this year (hence the lack of content on this page) and we made our honeymoon trip to a cabin out in Hueston Woods, a state park in southern Ohio. Hueston Woods is named after Matthew Hueston, who served with "Mad" Anthony Wayne, a general in the Revolutionary War. Anyways, we were driving from our cabin to one of the attractions in the park and flipping through the local radio stations. We found a good new rock station and they debuted a new song from a Cincinnati band called Mad Anthony. Coincidences everywhere, right? Anyways, I immediately was hooked on the song and decided to look the band up once we got home from our trip. What I found was one of the most ambitious musical projects I had ever seen. Mad Anthony (the band) had decided to release a brand new song every week for 52 weeks. You read that right; a brand new song every week for an entire year. It's a crazy undertaking that was only made better by the fact that they included musicians that they knew and had toured with or met in their history as a band. Every song has a different bit of flair added by the guest musician and as a whole it's a really great project. I took some time to listen to most of the songs a month ago and there are a LOT of gems in there. Anyways, that's a LOT of reading up there so let's get down to the song. "Sad Songs" is easily characterized by it's chorus line, which simply says "I've got a lot of sad songs, I've got a reason I can sing'em." It opens with a catchy guitar line that chugs all the way through the song and has a basic structure that could get almost anyone nodding their head and singing along. We all have sad songs inside of us, right? Anyways, give it a spin and give these boys a listen!
