 The Intrigue of Mystical Indie Pop Rock from Faye
The first article of the year, profiling up-and-coming singer/songwriter Faye and her new material. She has a ton of potential and is definitely someone to keep an eye on in 2020.


 SoHi Set the Tone on Debut EP
I met up with an old musical friend of mine, Steve Abele, and was able to do a review of his new group's newest effort. Even after all these years, Steve is still cranking out catchy headbangers.


 ALBUM REVIEW – Hello Emerson – How to Cook Everything
Perhaps the coolest thing to happen to me in 2020 - we got an e-mail from Hello Emerson's PR agency about covering their new record. Featured in their material were quotes from the review I did for them a few years ago. Obviously, I jumped at the opportunity to do another piece with them.

I like an interview with a good story - I met up with the guys from lml during the NFC playoff game between the Saints and Vikings, and so our interview was half that, half us talking about music. It was a great time. These are two great dudes.

The Triumphant Return of label me lecter 
 So, of course, I had to do a show review with them. lml packed the house and really had the crowd feeding off of their energy. I'm kind of disappointed that the global pandemic has put a damper on bands like this playing out, because they had really hit their stride.

New Age Connect (with Atimera) Fosters Connections and Networking Relationships at First Group Event 
I went to this show specifically just to enjoy a night out and see what New Age Connect was all about. I was blown away at the level of dedication they have for the music scene in Ohio, and am super excited to help them build that brand.


The Raquels Premiere New Single and Talk About Plans for New Record
Right before everything was shut down due to COVID-19, I was able to meet up with my old friends, The Raquels, to talk about the new music they're making and what they hope to achieve this year.


Sifting Through The Musical Mind of Mudbrain
A friend of mine referred me to Mudbrain, and I was caught off guard by the humility and love for music that their lead singer has. It was an instant mesh, and this is another one where I'm stoked to see where the band goes.

Getting Level with Cleveland’s Lilieae
As usual, I was browsing through PromoWest's Local Discover Spotify list and found the badass sound of Lilieae. I had been wanting to dig deeper into the Cleveland scene, and their openness to chatting made it quite easy.


Ghost Train Rolls Through Ohio
Usually when I reach out to bands about Q+A sessions, I get smaller responses than what Ghost Train afforded me.  It made for a longer read, but you can tell these dudes are serious about their craft as well as their stories.


TRVSS Finding Ways To Reach Fans During Current Quarantine
From one Cleveland act to another, TRVSS actually reached out to me after my Lilieae article. As it turns out, they're also good friends with Grumpy Plum. Circle of life, right? I'm glad Cleveland has just as many badass artists as I hoped they would.

Don Drapery Promises Hope With New Single “Incredible Creatures”
Don Drapery is the solo project of Jason Turner from Fashion Week. This song is beautiful, and I'm glad I had the chance to review it.

New Age Connect Doing Their Part To Help Save Local Venues
NAC had just hit its roll when the stay-at-home was signed. Multiple shows were cancelled, but they are doing their best to help venues and bands survive in these trying times.


Corduroy Brown Brightens Your Day with “To My Younger Self”
This one was exceptionally cool to do. Corduroy Brown started out as just a musician whose music intrigued me, but in meeting the man I found so much more than meets the ear.  I definitely hope to be doing more with this guy in the future.

The Villaintinos Pack Fifty Pounds of Rock Into Ten Pound Sack on Debut Album
Although you don't hear it much on the radio anymore, the punk side of Columbus never ceases. Nevermind the cheesy title, just check out the music!


Thomas and the Work-Men Bring Sunshine To Your Summer
Thomas and the Work-Men were a band referred to me quite some time ago by my friends in The Broken Relics, so I relished the opportunity to be able to do an interview with them. Great dudes! Another one I can't wait to see live once everything passes.

Then Falls The Sky – Evolving From Unconventional Origins
Then Falls The Sky were one I picked up on through Atimera and New Age Connect. It feels nice to get back into metal after being somewhat platooned in alt-rock.

Ohyoholos ~ Funny Name or Serious Music? We Search For The Answer…
Another church link-up - seeing as how I can't actually see any of these people in person, it was really nice to do an itnerview with someone I actually KNEW! lol this one also featured one of my favourite quotes from banjoist Ben Stepp about "the Lindsay machine".

Taking A Look Inside The Manatee Room
The six degrees of separation chain link just keeps rolling. I found Grumpy Plum at a Broken Relics show, and they brought me Lilieae, who got me to TRVSS, who told me I had to check out The Manatee Room. We legitimately laughed through this entire conversation - one of my favourite interviews for the year.

Groove U Capstone Project 2020 – The C-BUS Sessions: Remixed and Live!
This was an interesting one that came to me - Groove U was actually where Forever Unknown got their big break, winning their Instaband contest. For this article I spoke with one of their seniors about their special project that they had put together for the year, and how they adapted it due to COVID.

Blend Get Introspective with Me, Myself & I
With the absence of concerts, this year has been heavy on music reviews and interviews. For this one I did a single review for a Columbus act who has slowly been building steam.

REVIEW – Digging Deep with Lisa Gain & the Rusty Silos Debut LP
Lisa Gain is one of my favourite Columbus singers, so I jumped at the opportunity to to an album review for her, having previously covered one of her solo singles for the site. It was pretty cool listening to this one, at it was a collection of songs she had written over the last 20 years and finally recorded.

The Perfect Summer Anthem Arrives on Thomas and the Work-Men’s New EP “Good Company”
The TWM boys were so impressed by my interview that they allowed me the opportunity to review their 3rd EP. With each album, their sound matures and they show why they were recently signed and will hopefully be moving up in the world.

COVID literally shut the city down 2 days before the actual Steadfast Festival, so T/U came up with the idea to do a fun virtual fest!

Making The Best Of A Bad Year With Meryl Creep
I reached out to Meryl Creep frontman Matthew Jones because, duh, the band is called Meryl Creep. What I found underneath was a deep individual with a passion for battling mental illness and making great music. Truly a fantastic find near the end of the year.

Echobreak have a promising sound and are a super excited group of dudes looking to change the way music is done. Add them to the list of bands I'd definitely like to see in 2021.

Returning Home with Silver Cave
The last interview I did in 2020 was with a guy who was very passionate about his band and very willing to talk at length about them. It always makes my job easier when they are able to fill in the details for me!

The Wonderful Enigma That Is Wolfgang Parker
  Piece #1 on the year was an interview I did with the legendary Wolfgang Parker. We immediately hit it off and spent over 2 hours chatting about our lives in the music industry and our thoughts on things past present and future. It was a great time.


Weedhaven Laughing Academy at The Shrunken Head – 2/2/19
 It's a shame that the first concert of the year I went to was so good - the rest have a helluva bill to live up to.


Album Review - Jovan Karcic - 2015
 Rick tasked me with a curious album to review - a highly experimental piece from Columbus veteran Jovan Karcic.  It took me a few listens to really stick what I wanted to say, but in the end I enjoyed doing this one.


Searing and Contemporary, Say Hello to The Broken Relics
 I just happened to be bumbling through the 99.7 Local Stuff page when I found The Broken Relics. I immediately loved what I heard and we quickly set up this interview, which went fantastically. It's been a while since I really connected with a group of guys like that - probably since my piece on The Raquels last year. Love it!

REVIEW – Truslow Brings a Hurricane to Rumba Café
Two years ago, I had the opportunity to meet with James from Truslow and get the scoop on his wonderful group. As time has passed, that article I wrote has continually garnered weekly views on our site at a higher rate than any other item. Incredibly, it currently sits as the most viewed article on our humble page, a fact that I did not realize until the beginning of this year. As of March 9th, it averages 54 views per month, including 35 per since it's initial month release. There's only one other article on the page that averages more than a dozen per month since it's first month. So, quite obviously, I jumped at the opportunity to link with him again.


Brave The Sea Release New Album “The Kraken” at Ace Of Cups – 3/15/19

Rat Motel Find Their Groove With New EP “Old Man Winkle”
Rat Motel was a band I covered in their infancy, and just this year they finally released a good, polished EP. Well, maybe not so polished... it's a good mashup of garage-y fuzz rock.


The Scratches Are Back and In Their Best Form
When I was at the Brave The Sea CD release, I also had the opportunity to interview a rockin' quartet called The Scratches. They ended up being another cool group of down-to-earth folks with lots of great ideas for how to make great music.


Lisa Gain Proves She’s “Worth It” With New Single

The Broken Relics Shine on Debut EP “With Reverence”
After a stellar interview with the Relics back in February, I kept in contact with the guys and when it came time for them to release their EP, I jumped at the chance to review it. I was floored at how good every single song on it is. Just amazing stuff. I am quite sure that this band has a very high ceiling for their career.

The Buffs offered me the opportunity to review their newest effort, and I was definitely not one to turn it down. I honestly think that every GGB album should be live, going forward. They're amazing!

REVIEW – The Wonderful Complexity of Pale Grey Lore
Pale Grey Lore is actually one of the bands that got me back into the Columbus music scene. I saw them several years ago opening for Daymare at the newly christened Spacebar, and I was immediately hooked. They've only matured since then and I definitely jumped at the opportunity to review them. Doing it in a laundromat only enhanced the excellence.


Reflex Machine Link Paranoia with Reality
I just never know what I'm getting into with interviews sometimes, and with this gruesome twosome I found the "world's premiere Philip K Dick tribute band". Um, hello, only my favorite author? Excellent!


The Patchbay Music Festival Shines Positive Light On Mental Health Awareness
Perhaps the coolest thing that happened to me this summer was linking up with Kyle Jones from Patchbay Columbus about the music festival he was looking to put together. I've made so many wonderful connections, both musically and among the mental health community, since all of this came together.

Sights, Sounds, and Real Talk from The Patchbay Music Festival
For my money, this is my crowning jewel in terms of writing. I don't think I've ever had an article that I got so much positive feedback on. It was a thrill to cover this show, to talk to the artists, and to be able to share stories that positively impact people's lives.


Breathe In Deeply The Brotherly Essence of Rat Motel
The boys in Rat Motel have grown and matured since I first met them two years ago, and it was quite cool to be able to put their story to paper.  From a musical standpoint, both of the brothers are geniuses, and I wish I could have spent an entire day picking their brains.

After meeting with the guys from Reflex Machine back in July, I had a thousand ideas for them, but the first that immediately bubbled up was premiering one of their new songs. Of course, we stumbled over a ton of technical difficulties getting it to work, but it was still pretty cool to score this honor.

I actually participated in their contest to find the "Mystery Box" and ended up winning, leading to a wonderful bevy of prizes. Later Rick reached out to me to see if I'd be able to review the record. How do you review something so unique??


Defining Cleveland’s Grumpy Plum
A really cool thing about Music in Motion is getting to meet bands from outside of Columbus. I saw Grumpy Plum open for The Broken Relics a few months ago, and had been itching to link back up with them again. We spent almost 2 hours talking and I had to whittle all of that into an article. Seriously, loads of fun!

Pale Grey Lore Explore The End with New Album “Eschatology”
Pale Grey Lore still stand near the top of the best bands in Columbus. To review their album was an absolute pleasure, and fortunately it was 100% kick ass.


Shining The Spotlight on Forever Unknown
One of the hottest names in Columbus is a group of 16 year olds. How wild is that? They won a contest to open for a national act, have played a few festivals, and are releasing their first EP to the world this month.

Forever Unknown Trips The Light Fantastic at Big Room Bar
Even though I had already seen them twice, I had to go see them again and do a review. These kids are about to move mountains in Columbus, and hopefully across the state and maybe even the world.

The Music In Motion Columbus Birthday Bash 2018
What better way to cap off our first year as a music magazine than with a birthday show! Illogic, Lizard McGee (of Earwig fame), We Are The Movies, Orion and the Constellations, and Red Skylark played at the Big Room Bar at CD102.5. It was a wonderfully eclectic show with the pop-punk ferocity of We Are The Movies, straight-forward lyrics from Illogic, bluesy jazzy stylings of Orion and the Constellations, the "emotional butter" of Lizard McGee, and the 90s inspired rock sounds of Red Skylark.


Music In Motion Columbus Releases Compilation Album
What I believe to be our crowning achievement for our first year of operation, Rick slaved tirelessly on this project. 18 tracks, including 7 that were specifically recorded for the compilation, titled "The Fog That Surrounds Us". The album was released at our first birthday show.


Late Night Double Feature with Miller and The Hunks and The Turbos at The Shrunken Head – 2/17/18

In what ended up being a great show to kick off Year 2 of MiM for me, I got to hang out with some old friends and make new friends covering Miller and the Hunks again. My boys Courtney from Work were there as well. It's always a good night of music at the Shrunken Head. MATH had the crowd more pumped than any show I've been to in a while.

Stopping the Stigma with MAELSTRØM MAGNET
It took some work, but I was finally able to catch up with Mael and we talked over the course of a week and a few e-mails about anxiety, music, and what it's like to be a female musician. When I started writing this article, I honestly felt like I was kind of lost, but it ended up being one of my more favorite articles I've written.

United in Concert: Autism Awareness Fundraiser – Henodus Rocks BRP
My friend Brandon and I talked about this show for a few months before he got all of the details hammered out. I knew that I had to do my part to help promote not only the show, but the importance of awareness towards issues surrounding the autism spectrum. Also, Henodus kicked ass.

Jesse Clendenin Earns Promotion to Associate Editor of Music In Motion Columbus
Hello, it's me. We worked so hard in 2017 and against some odds we persevered. Year two got off to a slower start than we anticipated, but Rick and I are going to bang heads to make things bigger and better this year!

Review - Cairo Knife Fight at The Shrunken Head - 5/25/18
I took a vacation to celebrate 2 years of marriage to my beautiful wife mid-May and told Rick I'd be ready to get the ball rolling again after a couple of stagnant months. As fate would have it, my first day back I was called on to cover LA's Cairo Knife Fight. It ended up being a really cool night despite the low turnout.

Podcast The Cat Club Podcast Memorial Day All-Local Special 2018 – Episode 55
I got to head back to Casa Gethin to join Rick for another exciting podcast episode! He mistakenly states that I hadn't been on the podcast since last Memorial Day, forgetting out exciting shenanigans in Episode 24. This time around things were much more somber, but it was good to be back in studio for another round.

Album Review – Threat Level Midnight Earn Passing Grade
This was an album that I had had my eyes on for several months before finally getting the chance to review it. I had asked Rick about it after it was released but everything lapsed between all the madness happening at work in January and February. Finally having the chance to sit down and give it a good spinning, I found myself more than excited for the potential this band shows.


REVIEW – DAYMARE Return With A Vengeance at The Spacebar – 6/9/18
I've known Dustin from Daymare for 13 years and even now he still surprises me sometimes with his musical gumption. I was grateful to have a chance to enjoy this show and to put some closure on our friend Malena's death. Also, this band is just fantastic.


The Raquels Want To Be A Little Different
I had been following The Raquels online after hearing a few of their singles on Spotify. I had no idea they'd be so cool to hang out with, but that's what this business is all about. They are about to embark on a major tour that might make or break them, and I'll definitely be rooting for them.

The Raquels Take Flight at Spacebar – 6/23/18
A quick turnaround is always nice on an interview, and as it happened the guys from The Raquels had one more Columbus show before heading out on their huge tour. What a great time!

This one kind of got kicked around because Rick was busy working his jobs and I was busy moving. Once we were finally settled into our new place and had internet, I made sure to put the finishing touches on one of the more intriguing records I have reviewed.

Threat Level Midnight Bids Farewell After Two Year Run
I was super sad to find out that my first opportunity to see TLM was going to be my last, but the band made the best of it. What a great show. I hope that some of them stick around Columbus and continue to make great music here in the 614!


ALBUM REVIEW – Letters of Transit Quickly Mesh with Release of Debut EP
In what ended up being my last piece for the year, I got the chance to listen to Letters of Transit's solid debut EP. I'm looking forward to big things from these guys going forward.

My first official article for the website. I had been super busy through January as Rick began building the first incarnation of the website. A co-worker of mine had been talking up his band for weeks and I figured they would be a perfect opportunity for me to get my feet wet in the music scene again.

A lot of the initial emails we received had EPs that bands wanted us to review. I was tasked with a rather difficult one that got a less than favorable rating from me. I will always stand by my words and my opinions on music, and you will always get an honest review from me.

Out Of Nothing Comes Serious Music for Ex-Nihilo - 4/9/17
I met the bassist from Ex-Nihilo when he brought me tickets to a show his band was opening, and in fact I didn't even end up attending that show. This was my first opportunity to see them, and they did not disappoint. All 3 of the acts that evening were fantastic.

Jocef Michael Won't Take No For An Answer
My first true interview for the site came from the opening act at the Ex-Nihilo show I had just attended. Jocef brought a ton of fans to a mid-evening Sunday night show and I was impressed by his stage presence. As it turns out, he's a pretty cool guy as well.

Go Go Buffalo Stampede Through Spacebar 4/21/17
This one honestly caught me by surprise. I didn't really know anything about GGB before hand, and honestly I almost missed out on the chance to hit this one. I'm glad I didn't. It was a wacky blast.

I was finally at a place in May where I felt like I really needed to step up my contributions to the page. I decided to dig through my old contacts and found the guys from Zero Signal, who I knew from my days doing Jester Promotions. They've got a pretty cool new concept going and I'm excited to follow up with them going forward.

A Tribute to Chaos - The Story of Fleischgewehr
When I heard there was a Rammstein tribute group in Columbus, I knew I had to be there. Not only were Frankie and Stephen fantastic musicians, but great dudes to boot. 

Rocket From The Tombs - Anything But Sonically Reduced at Ace of Cups 5/13/17
This one fell into my lap when my editor hurt his back during the week of the show. I felt bad because RFTT was one of his favorite groups from the past and he had done a fantastic interview with their lead singer as well. It turned out to be a really great article and highlighted some of our photographers best work.

The Cat Club Podcast - Essential Memorial Day Weekend Playlist
Rick and I sat down and did a podcast episode highlighting a baker's dozen of songs including some deeper cuts you might not normally hear on the bigger stations and lists.

Musical Maturation With Morning Theft at Spacebar - 5/27/17
One of the worst weeks of my life ended on a spectacularly high note with this show. Even though we didn't end up getting into the club until well after it was supposed to open, we had a true bonding moment with the peeps from Morning Theft. It really was a lifesaver for me.

The Fresh Live Flow of the Jocef Michael Band at Skully's - 5/30/17
I had been waiting to see a true show from the JMB after catching part of their set in April. As it turns out, Jocef and Co had a surprise in store for everyone. His ever-evolving live show never disappoints.

It was another bizarre evening at Spacebar as we were treated to a group of loud 16 year olds and their x-branded fans. It ended up being pretty wild.

Friday Spotlight - The Beauty of Truslow
I got to sit down at WOB with James Truslow, who leads the local pop group Truslow. I had no idea the direction that this interview would go, and I ended up being brought to tears at least once while talking to him about his music.

Artistic Gravity Abounds with So Long, Stargazer at King Avenue 5 - 6/16/17
I finally got the chance to see Chase McCants (My Beloved Tragedy) in his new band So Long, Stargazer. I was not disappointed. I would go as far as saying that this might have been the best concert I have attended this year.

The Night The Jester Joined The Cult Of Cats 
Rick had tasked me with finding a show to cover on Saturday while he was out of town, and because of Pride weekend, the pickings were slim. I ended up finding Dayton's Curse of Cassandra at my old home bar in Reynoldsburg, and I was treated to a fantastic evening of excellence.

Midweek Spotlight - Musical Connections With Nicholas Rowe 
I got to sit down with a guy who got word of us from an unlikely source; my mom. It was an intriguing interview but I got a lot of good talking points out.

What an amazing night. I knew the guys from F+ would be a treat after interviewing them back in May, and I knew I was in for a great night when Frankie pulled up beside me in the parking lot and rubbed his silver paint all over me. It was a great time.

ALBUM REVIEW - Hello Emerson "Above The Floorboards" 
After taking a mental health break in July (some things are more important than music, you'll understand) I came back to review a tremendous piece of musical craftsmanship from the band Hello Emerson. I'd say it's one of my top 5 favorite local records of the year so far.

An Album Release to Remember with Hello Emerson at Rumba Cafe - 8/25/17
Surprisingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly), the live show ended up being better than the album. I was of the intention of taking photographs, but with a 13 piece band on stage and with Rumba being packed to the point where I was smashed against the stage, I was tragically unable to capture any shots. However, I do believe my words did justice for the performance.

Soup to Nuts with Kristen Ford at Caribbean Jerks - 8/31/17  
My good friend Jules recommended Kristen, a current resident of Nashville, to me a few weeks before this show. I had seen her posters all over Caribbean Jerks (a bar next to my house) and I was thrilled to be able to cover her show. She herself ended up being a phenomenal person along with a tremendous musician.

The Many Hats of Javelina
The first band to actually follow up with me after I started passing out business cards was Javelina, of whom I had seen perform previously at Tree Bar. In a few weeks I'll be actually covering one of their shows, but here is an interview we did in the rain at Harvest. It was pretty cool.

Aural Hotness with Miller and the Hunks at The Tree Bar - 9/23/17
Another short notice show that ended up being pretty stellar. Miller and the boys were pretty cool to hang out with, despite the fact that it was in the 80s/90s the entire night!

REVIEW - Two Fingers in The Barrel with "Room Full of Sky" from Cosmo's Elephant 
Amy from Javelina e-mailed me after their interview went live to tell me about her "other" band, Cosmo's Elephant. The group let me sit in with them to preview their new EP before it dropped, and we had a good time telling stories and cracking up over good/bad band and song titles.

The Cat Club Podcast Is Full of Shenanigans with The Jester - Episode 24 
 Rick and I got together and put forth a sort of recap show on everything we had done so far this year; bands we had seen, people we had worked with, well as a peek at what we have going on in the next few weeks.

A Six-Pack of Aural Solemnity with Javelina at The Shrunken Head - 10/13/17
 It was finally time for Javelina to perform, and boy did they ever. Those two have some deep and dark talents. The music, the imagery, and of course the face painting!!

ALBUM REVIEW - Zero Signal's EP "Divided by Zero" 
 The boys in Zero Signal did not disappoint with their debut EP. I wasn't sure what to expect coming in to it, but it was definitely an excellent output for a first shot at trying something new.

Death Trance Delights with Zero Signal at King Avenue 5 - 10/13/17
 However good the EP might have been, the live show blew it all away. What a fantastic punch in the face that night was. Perhaps the best night of music I've seen all year. Any time you can get 4 or 5 great bands rocking in an evening, you know you've experienced something excellent!

REVIEW - The Dark Horse in Motion Music Festival - 10/21/17
 A few weeks after seeing Curse of Cassandra at the Dark Horse Tavern, the DHIM festival was conceived. It ended up being a fantastic night of music! Every single band brought something different to the night, but every single one of them was tight and rocking. It was exhausting, but it was a ton of fun!

Setting The Trend with Columbus Indie Rock band Fashion Week
 Another band who goes to my church, Fashion Week agreed to an e-mail interview with me and we ended up having a lot of fun with it! Sometimes it can be difficult to really connect with someone through e-mails, but these guys are definitely some fantastic characters.

REVIEW - Fashion Week at Rumba Cafe 11/2/17
Finally getting to meet Jason and the boys at Fashion Week was a real treat, and they even had a surprise for me on stage. It was a good night for new tunes and new friends.

ALBUM REVIEW - Curse of Cassandra - Nekonomicon
I was kind of disappointed when my editor rejected my initial headline - "Curse of Cassandra add their own chapter to the Nekonomicon". However, this album is spot-on fantastic, and I'm not just saying that because I love the group. The production level is off the charts compared to their previous efforts, and the band has nowhere to go but up from here!

Shakin’ with The Holy Rattlesnakes at Spacebar – 11/25/17
In spite of Ohio State's victory earlier in the day, I was feeling a little mellow when I headed to the Spacebar for what ended up being my last show in 2017.

Final edit of 2017! What a great year! Some of the best shows I've EVER attended happened while covering for Music in Motion! Unfortunately I was locked into my day job for the month of December, but 2018 brings year 2 of MiM and the promise of bigger and better things!
