#14 - Spoon - New York Kiss
Spoon have been pumping out catchy indie albums since 1996, enjoying major success with the album "Ga Ga Ga Ga" in 2007, including the hit single "The Underdog". The band took some time off in 2010, and chances are if you knew someone who loved super indie/alt rock, you knew someone who was missing Spoon. The band reunited in 2014 to start working on their newest effort, entitled "They Want My Soul". The album debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 and received positive reviews from critics across the landscape. The song "Do You" reached #28 on the US Rock charts, and my other favorite tracks include "Knock Knock Knock" and "Rainy Taxi".
I'll be honest with you. There was a giant swing of excitement when this album dropped late last year. The moment I heard Britt Daniel's grainy voice on "Do You", I was reminded of why I didn't much care for the band in the beginning. Catchy hooks can only go so far when you have a voice like that. But some time this spring, I was driving to work when I caught the unmistakably urgent opening keys and guitar on "New York Kiss". Lyrically, the song describes the excitement of a kiss from a lover, one that stays in your memory and leads you through a million different feelings. The bassline bounces around and the guitars and keys keep you in the feeling to the very last second. It's the kind of song you can listen to for most occasions; equal parts happy, sad and powerful. A great offering from a band who made a definite impression on me in 2015.
