The 2015 Jester One Music Top 20 Countdown - #10

#10 - The Wombats - Give Me A Try

Another band I am highly grateful to have in the countdown this year. The Wombats are a band that I didn't care too much for before hearing a remixed version of their hit "Techno Fan" and then actually getting to meet the guys before their set in Columbus three years ago. Ever since then, they've been a favorite and I had been eagerly hanging on for the release of "Glitterbug" after they released the track "Your Boy is a Weapon" way back in 2013. Finally at the end of 2014 they slated a release date for what could be considered the most fun album of 2015; an equal mix of catchy hooks and dance beats. The Wombats mix together the sounds of many other bands to make a unique an exciting sound that is also showcased in the tracks "Headspace", "Emoticons", "Greek Tragedy", and "This Is Not A Party". The album is chock full of goodness and is a must-listen for anyone who enjoys good upbeat tunes.

The first time I listened to the disc, I got a distinct feeling from the aforementioned tracks, but most of all from "Give Me A Try".  The song kicks with a catchy vocal harmony before the keyboards begin to layer in and the bass drum starts thumping. But it isn't until the secondary synths and guitars drop in that the song reaches it's apex. It was the perfect sing-a-long chorus for the summer and a song that always meant a good time. The obvious lyrical theme rotates around a man chasing a woman he's desperately trying to start a solid relationship with. The protagonist definitely believes that the two would be a perfect couple, if only she would give him a try. The video features a bunch of outcast people trying to have their number called on Tindr. A few end up going out on miserable dates and they resort back to the dating app, hoping someone will (you guessed it) give them a try.

One of the highlights of my musical year was getting to see these guys this spring in concert. They put on an absolutely tremendous show. Having met them and seen them live, they seem like really great dudes and I cannot wait to see what they bring in the future. Also this marks 5 years in a row with dance-pop stylings at the #10 spot. Interesting indeed.
