The 2019 Jester One Music Top 20 Countdown - #16

#16. Blindside - Gravedigger

I mentioned in the intro to the Countdown that this year was littered with favorite artists from my past who released new music this year, many of which came after a long hiatus. None of these were more surprising than Blindside, a band who had been on hiatus for several years and had made no noise on social media in the last two years before suddenly updating all of their pages a few days before releasing a new single. It all happened very quickly, and just like that the band was back into oblivion.  They played 1 show after releasing one song, and nothing has been updated since July. They must be pretty stingy about interviews as well, because none of the media outlets have been able to get much of a response from them either. For what it's worth, Blindside was one of the most influential bands of my teenage years and I would be extremely thrilled for a new record from them at any time. Most people know them from their 2002 release Silence and their wildly popular single "Pitiful".

"Gravedigger" is a really great placeholder for the time being. If nothing else, it sounds like the natural evolution of what the band should've became after their last 3 records. You could honestly slot this song into Silence, too. It punches hard, it has some interesting timing shifts, and the lyrically as good as anything they've ever released. It's a tremendous song that demands a second listen. It came out when my best friend was in town from Alabama, and we listened to the song on YouTube like 5 times in a row while driving around. For what its worth, every time Blindside puts out a new record they put out a teaser song which is ALWAYS outstanding. In spite of its July release, I think this one would've climbed up higher on the charts if the band had been more active in 2019. As it stands, they just slipped through the cracks the song never really jumped much higher. That's not to say that it isn't a great song, and I'm fairly certain that whenever Blindside puts out another record, it will be featured high on the next Countdown.

Also, it's another year where #16 was a heavier song. How wild is that? With the exception of Chris Isaak and the Gorillaz, this has always been a good spot for packing a punch.

Favorite Line: "I'm not here to tell you about a dying world, I'm here to tell you that you're not dead yet. Cuz tonight I'm the grave robber, taking you home"
