The 2019 Jester One Music Top 20 Countdown - #15

#15. Syrian - We Are Stars

The lifespan of synth/darkwave projects can be sometimes fleeting. After all, it doesn't take a bunch of band members to make a record, it just takes time and ideas. And funding, of course. Unfortunately without massive label help, EDM groups tend to get relegated to the underground, which makes it even more special when you can find a good one to latch on to and ride with. After not releasing new music (outside of remixes) for 5 years, Syrian came back late last year with Sirius Interstellar, a trance-heavy record with the group's signature space-future theme rolling right through. It's a great pulsing record that equals another favorite of mine from them, titled Alien Nation. The Italian duo simply know how to keep the synths and drums rolling in a way that captivates both your mind and body. It's a solid record, especially for being self-funded. Other favorites include "Distance" and "Close Your Eyes".

"We Are Stars" is the opening track and the only to feature a video from the record. It's simple enough, with the chorus repeated multiple times and the synths ramping up frequency to keep your brain bouncing.  There really isn't too terribly much to write about it, except that it was one of those songs that I would always turn up and rock out to whenever it came on. The layers of synths are deep enough that you often catch little bits that you might have missed with each listen. The video makes me chuckle, because singer Andylab definitely tries to look super passionate while muttering/whispering words over the beats.

Favorite Line: "Standing still in the silent sky- seen afar, we are stars"
