The 2019 Jester One Music Top 20 Countdown - #12

#12. Bloody Hammers - From Beyond The Grave

2019 has been a good year for returning popular acts, and although Bloody Hammers have been rocking out for almost a decade, I never actually stumbled upon them until this summer, when I found "From Beyond The Grave" on a Spotify New Metal channel. I was immediately hooked on their dirty gothic/doom sound and drawn in by singer Anders Manga's deep croon. The band is essentially Manga and a keyboard/organist known only as Devallia. The band is currently signed to Napalm Records, who blew up a lot of buzz for their newest record, The Summoning. With good reason - it's a solid mix of sludgy gothic psych-rock, which the band calls "Southern Gothic Mountain Fuzz", and Manga's voice draws it all together. The band seems to center their lyrics around witchy black magic themes, and according to Spotify are massively popular in the Scandanavian countries.

While most of the songs on The Summoning resemble dirges, "From Beyond The Grave" has an upbeat guitar and creepy keys that filter throughout it around a pulsing drum. I think it was Manga's voice that first caught me, but it was one of those "I have to listen to this song several times" moments that really got me hooked on the band. It's definitely a creepy track that would fit into any Halloween themed playlist; it obviously deals with resurrection, and perhaps zombies and life after death.  While not being released as a single, the song racked up 105k streams on Spotify, good for third most for the band all-time. The video features a recently deceased Manga attempting to return to a grief-stricken Devallia as a spirit, shot like an old-time silent film. It will definitely fulfill any creepy desires you have.
