The 2018 Jester One Music Top 20 Countdown - #18

#18. The Raquels - Just a Txt

The Raquels are an up and coming 4 piece act out of Columbus that I had the pleasure of covering earlier this year. They like to call their sound "new-new wave" and "a DIY boy band", even if they sound nothing like the stereotypical 1990s boy band you'd imagine. Instead they blend a mix of bands like The 1975 and Two Door Cinema Club to create and fun and unique sound. Their live show is second to none as far as energy and excitement go, and they also embarked on a US tour this summer, going as far as New Orleans, New York and Florida. The band also released 5 singles over the last 12 months and are working on their debut EP.
Long before I met them, I first heard "Just a Txt" on Spotify's Local Discover channel.

The song has bouncy guitars, sparkly synths and a thumping bass riff from keyboardist Dave Butler. Guitarist Gabe Ritz uses his smoky voice to sing lead on the track, which touches on how we communicate, or perhaps how bad we are at communicating truthfully in 2018. It's about knowing that you're ghosting someone, but feeling somewhat bad about it. The 5 songs on the EP have over 25k streams on Spotify and the band has been known to sell-out venues around town, showing that they have staying power. Here's to more music from them in the future!

Favorite line: "They'll get the message with no message at all"
