The 2018 Jester One Music Top 20 Countdown - #16

#16. Good Charlotte - Shadowboxer

Speaking of bands that I never imagined seeing on the Countdown, my interest in Good Charlotte essentially dropped off the map when they started making auto-tuned dance tracks like "I Don't Wanna Be In Love". Their first record after coming back from hiatus was led by a single titled "40oz Dream", which is essentially all you need to know about that song and record. Long gone are the days of the multi-platinum selling The Young and The Hopeless, but the band switched things up on me this year with Generation Rx. The album has a little more edge to it than I'd expect from a pop-punk outfit like GC. The lyrics have a little more depth. And even though it's the same band-members they've had since their more famous days, it seems a little different.

Intriguingly, I might not have even checked out the record if not for "Shadowboxer". It's a huge song with a soaring chorus riff and perfectly splintered piano parts slicing through the drums and guitars. The song deals with inner demons and the video features the band playing in an old house while showing different struggling people looking at their reflections. Instead of being tongue-in-cheek, the band decided to really go introspective and deal with mental health issues this time around. Even though it's been 16 years and the Madden brothers are almost 40, it's good to see the band kicking back to where they need to be.

Favorite line: "All this hate will burn your life down, all the pain, you cause your own suffering"
