The 2018 Jester One Music Top 20 Countdown - #15

#15. Plushgun - Lukewarm

Alright, well I guess this entire countdown is shaping up to be blasts from the past. Plushgun is a band that was introduced to me by my wife at the time we started dating. The band had a minor hit in 2009 with "Just Impolite" and released their sophomore effort in 2012 without a ton of fanfare, while still holding a strong online presence and cult following. The band's sound had evolved from almost straight electronic music to incorporate more guitars and drums, but suddenly the band went on hiatus. They claimed that they were working on new material without any releases from 2012 until this April. The band even had gone silent on social media for almost two years, and then without warning dropped a new single and video.

Unfortunately, they've been mostly silent since the release of the song. But what a song it is. For a band built around bubbly synthesizers, it caught me off to hear a track that only featured an electric guitar, male and female harmony, and a light string section. It's a beautiful love song that tugs at the heartstrings and makes you wonder if a) the band is actually making new music and b) if this is the direction they'll be headed. Either way, hearing Dan Ingala sing like that really made me want more and more of what he was serving me.  The video for the song features a girl goofing around in what looks like a photo shoot with lyrics from the song popping up from time to time. I can only hope there will at least be an accompanying EP in the next year for these guys.

Favorite line: "You say embrace the things that make you most scared..."
