The 2018 Jester One Music Top 20 Countdown - #13

#13. Marshmello & Bastille - Happier

I know that I've spent a lot of time ripping DJs in recent years. There is this explosive trend in the music industry where artists are getting by solely by their name and not by their musical talent, ability, or ambition. DJs seem to be exploiting this niche more than any other area, with millions of fans flocking to see artists simply so they can say "I SAW xx AND THEY WERE AMAZING OMG". It's just the world we live in now. That doesn't mean that there aren't legitimately talent people behind the turntables; Avicii (RIP), Calvin Harris and Armin Van Buuren are names that I see often remixing and making their own music, and doing a fantastic job. But then you've got DJs literally just throwing garbage at the wall and attaching their names to other popular artists without really doing a whole lot to better the musical landscape.

But let's not hash around that for too long. Marshmello had 2 freaking billion streams on Spotify this past year. Regardless of his ability, people seem to love him, and getting together with Bastille has given both acts their highest charting Billboard single (#3) of their careers. It's an interesting mix of artists - the song gets play on Top 40 because of Marshmello but also gets on alternative stations and Hot AC formats due to Bastille being included. All in all, the song is a juggernaut, amassing 363 million streams on Spotify since its release in August. 363 million in just 4 months. With good reason - it tells the tale of a relationship that is falling apart. The protagonist is realizing that he is the one doing the damage and wants to make things better, even if it causes the relationship to end. I wasn't a huge fan of Bastille's last record, so its good to see that they (or at least singer Dan Smith) are working back towards a more positive direction.

Fair warning - the video will make you weep. It features a young girl getting a puppy as a present, and the puppy comforting the girl as she makes her way through awkward adolescence. That's as much as I'll tell you. Enjoy!

Favorite line: "I wanna raise your spirits, I want to see you smile but know that means I'll have to leave"
