The 2014 Jester One Music Top 20 Countdown - #20

#20 - I, The Breather - Swine:Cult (ft Ricky Armellino)

Starting with a metal tingle, #20 this year comes from Sumerian Record slammers I, The Breather. The band underwent a few lineup changes leading up to the recording of "Life Reaper" (In fact, vocalist Shawn Spann is the only remaining original member), but it didn't show in their songwriting abilities. From top to bottom, each song is equal parts slamming and melodic, with chugging riffs, powerful vocals and choruses that will stick in your head for days. Best tracks include "Life: Reaper", "Demon: Dreams", "Chain: Breaker", and of course our opening song on the countdown "Swine: Cult".

The song opens up with pulsing drums and roaring feedback before Spann begins his vocal assault on your eardrums. Once the guitars start chugging, your neck will definitely need to be replaced. This song is fast, heavy and powerful. If you re-attach your neck and listen to the lyrics, you'll hear a tale of a person who is showing the face of an innocent and perfect individual, despite having a disgusting soul underneath ("you're just a pig dressed like a sheep, the role you're playing doesn't end with forgiveness"). Ricky Armellino of Century and This Or The Apocalypse provides the vocals on the 2nd verse and did most of the production work on the album as well.

All in all, it was a perfectly crushing track for summer and a great song to kick into the 2014 Top 20 Countdown. Metal will play a large role this year, but will it take #1? Stay tuned!
