#7 - Impending Doom - Hellhole
What words can I use to describe Impending Doom's release "Death Will Reign"? Thunderous. Crushing. In-freaking-sane. I don't think there was a better metal album released. That makes 3 tremendous albums in a row for Brook Reeves and the boys, and they seem to just keep getting better. "Death Will Reign" marks the return of founding guitarist Manny Contreras, and he crushes deep low riffs throughout the release. "Ravenous Disease", "My Own Maker", "Endless", and so on. There are a few songs where the riffs become a little repetitive, but throughout the album there are some solid high-points where the band brings both a fierce technicality and a strumming finesse that crushes the eardrums and nods the neck.
The opening riff on "Hellhole", however is one of my favorite riffs of the year. To top it, they bring a crushing verse riff and the unstoppable message "I WOULD BE TERRIFIED IF YOUR SOUL WAS MINE". Reeves has often used his words to call out others with a ferocity unlike many other singers in the deathcore genre. The song isn't overly complex but it does itself well when it jumps around. To top it off, Reeves finishes by the song by screaming "Burn in your hellhole, burn for what you've done" over the lowest tunage of guitars you'll find. It's always good to have some strong metal in the top 10, and this won't be the last of it. Enjoy!
