The 2014 Jester One Music Top 20 Countdown - #10

#10 - Cut Copy - We Are Explorers

Cut Copy hail from Australia and already have landed a #1 record in their home country, despite never cracking the top 45 in America. "Free Your Mind" made it as high as #98 on the Billboard charts (#19 in AUS) but except for minor airplay on CD102.5, they were not to be seen around these parts. It's a shame, because the album is exceptionally produced and could easily be held as a standard for what dance-pop should sound like. The band toured heavily through Australia, the US and Europe in support of this "Free Your Mind", and despite the lack of major catchy singles, the album is very strong and well worth a listen.

"We Are Explorers" is actually a very fun song that starts with flashy synths before dropping into a bouncy bass mix. The verses may sound similar but a closer listen shows complex patterns that will kick around your head all night if you're not careful. The coolest thing (by far) about this song is the video, which features glowing inch-high figures printed from a 3D printer in stop motion animation making their way through New York City. It's definitely a unique video and a very fun song to boot. And I think FUN is necessary once you've reached the top 10!
