#13 - Beartooth - Beaten in Lips
Doing Columbus Ohio proud, Beartooth rose from the ashes of famed electro-hardcore band Attack Attack!. Caleb Shomo and company exploded onto the scene in 2013 with their EP "Sick" and then blasted off summer 2014 with their full length LP "Disgusting". The album is a full-on punk/metal assault on your eardrums with painfully honest lyrics and ear-ripping screams. Standout tracks include "In Between", "The Lines" and "Sick and Disgusting", which might be the most painful track of all.
But the album shines brightest on it's hit single, "Beaten In Lips". The moment the guitars kick in, Shomo screams "Every thing that I say won't mean anything less when I'm down in a grave and you put me to rest", which signifies just how powerful and personal this song is about to get. The song is a brutal point-of-view account of child abuse, where Shomo urges the listener to "keep living loud and proud". The line that struck me hardest was in the crushing breakdown, where he screams "Listen to the sound of the lives you're ruining!". It hits me personally, not on a physical abuse level but on an emotional and psychological one. Either way, it's an incredibly strong song; 3:33 of fast-paced adrenaline and madness. The video, in typical hardcore fashion, has the band playing in a tiny room filled with headbanging fans, and is intermixed with shots of abused teenagers. Big time stuff from a band that will surely explode with their next release.
