Title: Divide Us (ft Mari Kattman)
Artist: Blackcarburning
Album: Watching Sleepers
Blackcarburning is a side project of Mesh's Mark Hockings, although Mesh has been inactive for so long that I'd almost consider it his primary endeavor at the moment. The projects aren't totally dissimilar to each other - Mesh's lyrics are a little more personal, Blackcarburning's synths bite a little harder, and having different vocalists on a few of the songs definitely makes it a little more intriguing. But it seems that there is a significant gulf between the creative nature of the songs. In fact, I'd say "Divide Us" is probably the most Mesh-esque song on the record, with Helix's Mari Kattman delivering a brilliant vocal performance that blasts the song into the stratosphere. Even though the song starts slowly and lasts every bit of six minutes, it has the best chorus of any song I heard this year, which spent a lot of time stuck in my head.
Favorite line: "It's always been you and me"
